Rep. Torres Demands HUD Account for Fair Housing Enforcement on Lgbtq+ Complaints
Rep. Ritchie Torres has sent HUD Secretary Scott Turner a letter demanding a detailed accounting of fair housing enforcement, focused on complaints involving sexual orientation and gender identity. The letter asks for case-level disposition data on every complaint removed from HUD's backlog, monthly data on sexual orientation and gender identity complaints since January 20, 2025, and current FHEO staffing. It cites reporting that HUD stopped investigating an Arkansas man's complaint alleging he was denied housing because he is gay. Torres argues the retreat conflicts with the Fair Housing Act's command to investigate complaints within 100 days where practicable. HUD's response deadline is November 1, 2026; nothing in the letter changes any housing provider's obligations.
